Illustration 133es-2.jpg

RES 16 – "the Oakland cottages. Cheltenham or fox hunters and their favorites". In this scene the fox hunters have come up to a cottage inhabited by a number of women. One woman is reading the hunters from a top window. Other women have come out to speak to the hunters on horseback. Another fox hunter has dismounted and is chatting with a woman who is leaning out of the window. He is escorting a woman behind the house. It is not clear whether or not these women are prostitutes. Cruickshank may be depicting a visit by the fox hunters to a country brothel.
