Robert Cruikshank Book Illustrations: morning and in low spirits – a scene in a lockup house

Illustration 101es-2.jpg

RES 1 – the title reads "morning and in low spirits – a scene in a lockup house". This illustration for trays a group of men of varying backgrounds but all with pretensions of being gentlemen milling about a "lockup house". In Victorian slang a lockup house was a public house kept by sheriffs to which they convey the persons that they have arrested. One can therefore presume that the gentleman in the picture are in fact debtors who have been arrested for nonpayment of debts.
